The WNBA has seen its highest rating for a game in 23 years, after this last weekends matchup between the Chicago Sky and Indiana Fever, putting two players who know each other very well against each other after weeks of behind the scenes talk and quiet jabs.

Angel Reese of the Sky, and Caitlyn Clark of the Fever went against each other yet again this last Sunday after the two played each other twice in college bringing a lot of attention to the sport of women’s college basketball; once for the National Championship, and again in the Final Four of the 2024 NCAA Women’s tournament. The two would go 1-1 against each other setting up some interesting matchups for the years to come as both have entered their rookie year in the WNBA.

Clark has had the upper hand as their young careers begin, defeating Reese and the Sky, at the start of June winning 71-70 in a close one with Clark scoring 11 with 6 assists, and Reese scoring 8 with 13 rebounds.

In the most recent matchup, Clark would be the star many presumed she would be defeating the Sky again 91-83, leading the game in scoring with 23 points and 9 assists, and Reese scoring 11 points with 13 rebounds.

In the process of the Fever winning their 5th game of the season, the league saw a record mark that hasn’t been seen since 2001. The contest averaged 2.25 million viewers, which would be a 225% increase over a game going on at this time of the year last season. The broadcast peeked at 3 million viewers.

The next matchup between the two media acclaimed rivals will take place when Caitlyn Clark and the Fever will travel to Chicago to take on Angel Reese and Sky June 23rd. Will we see the rating top the previous games? Given a primetime slot on a weekend not including NFL, NBA, or NHL related certainly would help in the ever increasing popularity of the WNBA and women’s sports.
