Top Corn Producing States Report “Silking”

9 of the top corn producing states have reported that their corn has begun it’s silking phase according to the USDA.

Silking refers to when the silks, or stigmas of the female flowers, emerge from the ear to receive pollen and begin the fertilization process. Each silk connects to an ovule, or potential kernel, on the ear, and must be pollinated to develop into a kernel.

Some States include.

North Carolina with a total surge of growth from 20 percent last week to 43% currently.

Tennessee has also reported 34% of their corn crop has begun silking.

And Texas leading with 67 percent silking reported.

 

Other states reporting silking include Missouri, Kansas, Kentucky, Illinois, Indiana, and Nebraska.

 

The USDA also reported that 4 percent of the national corn crop has started silking.
