North Dakota University Chancellor Will Step Down in 2025

Chancellor Mark Hagerott will lead the North Dakota University System for another 18 months before transitioning to a professor position, as determined by the State Board of Higher Education on Tuesday. The board extended his contract by six months, through December 2025, following a closed-door session. After his term, Hagerott will become a distinguished professor of artificial intelligence and cybersecurity for three years.
Hagerott, who has led North Dakota’s 11 public colleges and universities since 2015, will see his salary increase from $424,035 to $440,996 next year. He expressed gratitude for the transition back to academia, stating, “I still am an academic.”
The board, meeting in Bottineau, also extended all campus presidents’ contracts by one year. The specifics of Hagerott’s new professor role and salary are yet to be determined.
