Governor Doug Burgum has declared June as Safety Month in North Dakota, highlighting the increased risk of unintentional injuries and deaths during the summer. “North Dakota residents and all workers deserve to live in communities that promote safe and healthy living,” Burgum stated in his proclamation.

Since 1996, National Safety Month has been observed each June, promoted by the North Dakota Safety Council (NDSC) and the National Safety Council (NSC) to raise awareness about safety from the workplace to any place. Summer months see a rise in unintentional injuries and fatalities, with over 4,100 preventable workplace deaths and 4 million injuries reported in 2020. The ongoing impacts of the pandemic continue to pose significant threats to public safety and health.

“National Safety Month builds awareness of everyday safety and steps to reduce injury risk,” said Chuck Clairmont, Executive Director of NDSC. “We should strive for zero preventable injuries and deaths. National Safety Month covers traffic, work, and home safety, offering important reminders for everyone.”

As families and teens travel for summer vacations, North Dakota enters the 100 deadliest days of summer. Additionally, outdoor work in industries like construction, farming, and energy increases, raising safety concerns.
