The NBA Draft commenced last night, although not nearly covered as the NFL Draft, but still no matter the sport the draft is an important step in teams building themselves into contenders or running themselves in the ground.

The Minnesota Timberwolves are coming off one of their best seasons in 20 years and ended their season in the Western Conference Finals with the feeling of “We’re right there.” Adding the thought of bringing in just a few more players could bring the Timberwolves over the hump and finally bring the NBA Finals Trophy home to Minnesota.

The Timberwolves started their NBA Draft with the 27th Overall pick of the evening, but made a surprising move that had Wolves fans excited. With the 8th pick in the draft the San Antonio Spurs would select Kentucky Guard Rob Dillingham, but a little bit later in the evening it was announced that Dillingham would be heading to Minnesota in exchange for future draft picks from the Wolves.

In his career at Kentucky, playing one year, he averaged 15 points, 4 assists, and 3 rebounds per game, and according to media is a “Baller” on the basketball court. Although his size is in question being 6’1″ and 176 pounds, Dillingham will benefit from the players around him and who will be teaching him the ropes like Anthony Edwards and Karl Anthony Towns.

After the trade, the Wolves had the 27th pick in the draft where they would select another guard with some size, 6’6″ from Illinois Terrence Shannon Jr, who averaged 15 points 3 assists, and 4 rebounds in his 5 year college career, size and experience makes this prospect interesting for the seasons to come.

The Wolves were not a team searching for the next ‘franchise changing’ player, but a player who can contribute to the movement and scoring of the ball and the defending of the ball where they can produce the most. Minnesota will look to add ANY kind of contributor if it means the finals prize is within reach like it was in 2024.
