Electrify America launched North Dakota’s first EV charging station in November, and the state is now ready for a significant expansion. The North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT) is accepting applications for EV charger funding through the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Formula program, with $25.9 million allocated by the Biden administration to install DC fast chargers over five years.
The new EV fast charging sites will be spaced no more than 50 miles apart and within one mile of exits along I-94 and I-29. NDDOT project manager Russ Buchholz stated that these chargers will enhance highway reliability and improve the driving experience for residents and visitors.
North Dakota has been slow to adopt EVs, with only 600 registered as of December 2022, compared to 614,300 gas cars. The state ranks low in EV charging infrastructure, with just 139 charging ports, including 58 DC fast chargers, and is 39th in EV charger density.
Electrify America’s first charging station in North Dakota is located in Jamestown on Interstate 94, featuring six DC fast chargers. Additional stations are planned for Grand Forks and other locations in 2024. The expansion aims to address range anxiety, extreme winter conditions, and bolster EV confidence among drivers.
