USDA to Repay Dairy Farmers for Lost Profits to H5N1

By Ryan King Jun 28, 2024 | 12:00 PM

The USDA announced they would be repaying dairy farmers for lost milk production if herds owned by the farmer have been infected with the H5N1 highly pathogenic avian influenza.

Beginning Monday July 1st, farmers who have confirmed infections in their herds may apply for lost milk production at the Farm Service Agency under the Emergency Assistance for Livestock, Honeybees, and Farm-raised Fish Program.

The program will pay dairy farmers up to 90% of milk production losses for the farms infected by the outbreak.

Payment for production losses will equal 90% of the USDA all-milk price based on records showing a loss in production.

To apply and receive payments, producers MUST SHOW that their herds have confirmed positive tests through the USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) National Veterinary Services Laboratories (NVSL).
