Two suspects were arrested on Thursday evening, June 27th, following a reported armed robbery and assault in Valley City.

At approximately 6:40 p.m., officers from the Valley City Police Department and the Barnes County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a disturbance involving a firearm in the 200 block of College Street Southeast. Upon arrival, officers located two victims who had been assaulted and robbed. The victims reported that the suspects, identified as Richard Dewien Schermer of Sanborn and Cheyenne Marie Woodward of Valley City, had brandished a firearm and made threats before fleeing the scene with stolen money.

The North Dakota Highway Patrol located the suspects’ vehicles at Schermer’s residence in Sanborn, North Dakota. Despite attempts to contact Schermer, officers were initially unsuccessful. Consequently, a shelter-in-place order was issued for Sanborn residents, and a perimeter was established around the residence. Both Schermer and Woodward were observed inside the house but refused to communicate with officers.

In response, the James Valley Joint Special Operations Team and the Stutsman County Narcotics Task Force were mobilized to provide support. Shortly thereafter, Schermer and Woodward were arrested without incident.

Following their arrest, the Valley City Police Department executed a search warrant on the residence and the vehicles at the scene. Schermer and Woodward are currently being held on charges of robbery and terrorizing.

The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are urging anyone with information regarding the case to contact the Valley City Police Department.
