The North Dakota Game and Fish Department announced its participation in Operation Dry Water (ODW), a nationally coordinated effort aimed at increasing awareness about the dangers of boating under the influence. The initiative seeks to reduce the number of accidents and fatalities linked to alcohol and drug use on state waterways.

ODW will take place from July 4-6, marking a national weekend of heightened enforcement focused on boating under the influence laws and educating recreational boaters.

Throughout the year, the Game and Fish Department works to inform boaters about the risks of operating watercraft while impaired by alcohol or drugs. However, during ODW weekend, game wardens will intensify their efforts, concentrating on waterways to promote safe boating practices and to remove impaired operators.

To stay safe on the water, it is crucial to boat sober, as alcohol use is the leading contributing factor in recreational boater fatalities. Always wear a life jacket, as 85% of drowning victims nationwide were not wearing one. Consider taking a boating safety education course, since 71% of boating-related deaths occurred on vessels where the operator had not received such instruction.

The North Dakota Game and Fish Department encourages all boaters to follow these safety tips to ensure a safe and enjoyable time on the water.
