A former Bison playmaker is going to see his way to the professional field just…. in a neighboring league.

Zach Mathis, a 6 year now alumni for the North Dakota State University Bison was selected in the CFL’s supplemental draft this last weekend to the Edmonton Elks. Who in turn gave up a 2025 first round selection to pick the former herd pass catcher.

Mathis became a reliable target for Bison quarterbacks Trey Lance, and Cam Miller/Cole Payton catching 95 passes for 1,392 yards and nine touchdowns in his career in Fargo.

Mathis did get a try in the NFL going undrafted and getting an invite from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this offseason, but Mathis’ chance to see the field will rise significantly by going to the CFL and playing for Edmonton, who could use his help after going 4-14 in 2023, and are currently 0-4 in the CFL this season.
