On Wednesday morning around 3 a.m., Sioux Falls Police and the Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Office responded to an incident at a Get-n-Go convenience store on the 600 block of S. Minnesota Ave.

Upon arrival, an officer began taking gunfire from inside the store. A call to Metro Communications confirmed a suspect with a gun was inside, and gunshots were heard during the call. The officer cleared bystanders, returned fire, and took cover, requesting backup.

The situation escalated into a hostage crisis, with employees held inside. The SFPD SWAT team and Minnehaha County Sheriff’s SWAT team were activated. At 3:40 a.m., a SWAT deputy fired a shot that struck the suspect, allowing officers to rescue three hostages. One hostage was in a bathroom, one was near the suspect, and one had exited the building.
