The Minnesota Vikings training camp is about to begin this weekend, and according to sources close to the situation, the Vikings COULD be starting without a key piece of their upcoming 2024 season.
Rookie quarterback and 10th overall draft pick in 2024 J.J. McCarthy is yet to sign his rookie contract and this waiting could result in some kind of holdout due to terms needing to be straightened out when it comes to the amount of guaranteed money McCarthy will receive in his first NFL contract.
This situation stems from division rival Chicago and their first round pick Caleb Williams not yet signing a rookie deal either. It is believed that the Vikings are waiting on the amount of the signing bonus Chicago will pay Williams, in order to justify the amount of money they’re about to spend on McCarthy. IF the Bears are willing to give Williams the majority of his signing bonus right away, then the Vikings will follow in turn. IF the Bears do NOT give Williams the whole signing bonus, the Viking will then hold back on giving McCarthy the same, since both players were selected in the Top 10 of the draft.
Fellow top 10 picks at the quarterback position Drake Maye, and Jayden Daniels have signed their contracts with Maye signing a 4 year, 36 Million Dollar Deal with the Patriots, and Daniels signing a 4 year 37 Million Dollar Deal with the Commanders.
Vikings Rookies are set to report to camp on Sunday, July 21st.
