By Ryan King Aug 2, 2024 | 10:20 AM

According to the USDA, acres of sunflowers planted in the United States are down almost 23% from 2023

Oil Type varieties planted total around 765,000 acres which is down 34% from last year, and non-oil types are estimated at 133,500 acres planted down 13% from last year.

Oil-type varieties are down in all eight major sunflower producing states, most notably South Dakota who has decreased over 175,000 acres compared to last year.

North Dakota also had a large decrease down almost 170,000 acres.

Experts warn, that with the current demand for both bird food and oil, that stock prices could become extremely tight by the end of harvest season.
