Wildfire Damage Cost Adding up in Western North Dakota

By Patrick McColl Oct 8, 2024 | 1:08 PM

40 fires hit Western North Dakota last weekend, and damage destroyed thousands of acres of agricultural land.

“The losses are significant,” North Dakota Stockmen’s Association executive vice president Julie Ellingson said.

One person died in the fire, and Ellingson said in one pasture, 49 cows died alongside 30 calves. Replacements for fences that were lost in the fire may cost up to $14,000 per mile, and the animals that were not killed in the fires are expected to face respiratory issues.
