The North Dakota Water Commission (SWC) and the Department of Water Resources (DWR) have announced a funding initiative aimed at improving safety around low head dams, which pose drowning risks due to downstream roller effects. At a recent meeting chaired by Lt. Gov. Tammy Miller, she approved $9.1 million in cost-share assistance for several projects across the state. Notable allocations included funding for the Maple and Wild Rice rivers, and construction support for Katz Dam on Painted Woods Creek. Additionally, the Mouse River projects in Minot received significant financial backing totaling $1.1 million.

A DWR Director emphasized the importance of these initiatives in enhancing public safety and reducing hazards associated with low head dams. The SWC will offer up to 75% cost-share assistance for mitigation projects, reflecting a commitment to collaborative efforts with local governments and partners.
