Farmers Concerned with Soil Moisture Despite Smooth Harvest Season

By Ryan King Oct 16, 2024 | 9:09 AM

Recent harvest conditions in the U.S. have been favorable, allowing producers to work in the fields with minimal weather disruptions. However, a significant concern is the lack of moisture returning to the soil before winter, particularly affecting winter grain establishment. Much of the country has experienced below-normal soil moisture, with some regions in the Plains going over 30 days without rain.

Forecasts indicate potential rain from an incoming cold front, but overall prospects for substantial fall precipitation remain low. Drought conditions are expected to worsen, impacting soil moisture levels and increasing risks for wildfires, forage production, and winter wheat establishment, which are critical for livestock producers. The lack of moisture now raises concerns about the implications for spring 2025 crop planting.
