North Dakota closes polls as vote count begins

By Patrick McColl Nov 5, 2024 | 7:39 PM

Polls are closed at most stations in North Dakota in the Central Time zone. Those living in the Mountain Time Zone will have until 8:00 p.m. to vote.  Those who are in line at the time the polls close will be able to vote.

The key races we are watching in North Dakota include United States Senator, with incumbent Republican Kevin Cramer facing Democrat Katrina Christiansen.  The battle for the state’s lone House seat is between Republican Julie Fedorchak and Democrat Trygve Hammer.  The Gubernatorial Race is a three-way race between Independent Michael Coachman, Republican Kelly Armstrong, and Democrat Merrill Piepkorn.

There are five ballot measures. Two are more popular than the rest. Measure 4 that would eliminate property taxes, and Measure 5 that would legalize recreational cannabis use. The measure to end local property taxes based on assessed value would force the state to provide an estimated $3.15 billion in replacement revenue to local government during each two-year budget. The State forecasts about $5 billion in general tax revenues in the current two-year budget.

So far, no significant measures or decisions have been called in the state. North Dakota will carry three electoral votes in the presidential election. A candidate must win 270 of the 538 total electoral votes to win the 2024 presidential election.

We will be checking in twice an hour with live local updates, and for the next 9 hours we will be carrying national coverage from CBS Radio.
