The downward spiral of a season for the New York Jets continues, when announced late this morning that the team would be moving on from general manager Joe Douglas.
Douglas took over as the Jets GM in 2019, and was a key player in the deal that brought quarterback Aaron Rodgers to New York after his tenure was winding down in Green Bay.
In his time, Douglas and the team collected 30 wins, and 64 losses, leading to his firing after the Jets recent close loss to the Indianapolis Colts.
The Former GM went all in when acquiring the 4-time MVP Rodgers, by signing key free agents that Rodgers wanted to see in New York including former Green Bay Packers, Randall Cobb, Billy Turner, Allen Lazard, and most importantly Rodgers’ best target Davante Adams.
Douglas also put together a couple of good draft classes, that included cornerback Sauce Gardner, running back Breece Hall, wide receiver Garret Wilson, and defensive lineman Quinnen Williams. Douglas did have a couple blemishes including the figuratively exiled Zach Wilson, who Rodgers replaced when he was traded for.
The Jets got an excuse for last years finish of 7-10, after Rodgers went down for the season 4 plays into the Jets’ first game, but entering the 2024 season, everything was supposed to be full go, and the Jets were prepared to become a playoff contender, and possibly a Super Bowl Contender.
The Jets have done the complete opposite.
11 Weeks into the season, the Jets sit at 3-8, with a interim Head Coach, and are now without a General Manager. Robert Saleh was fired after Week 5, and Douglas now joins him in the unemployment line after Week 11. The Jets also had to switch play callers midseason thinking that it would help the team get on the right track, but the Jets offense currently sits at 26th in the league in Total Offense, and sit in the middle of the pack in scoring offense as well.
The Jets will coast through the rest of the season and will hope to get a good draft pick in order to set the next head coach, and general manager in the right direction, but for now, the Jets remain aside from the Dallas Cowboys as the NFL’s Most Disappointing Teams of the 2024 season when it comes to expectations and the amount of playmakers on their roster.
