A Richland County Sheriff’s deputy is being charged with distracted driving after he reached down to grab his dropped cellphone while driving to a work event. 30-year-old Steven Nelk was driving his F-150 south along County Road 81 just after 6 p.m. on Nov. 14 when he dropped his phone on the floor.
Nelk reached to grab the phone and drove off the road into a ditch, according to the North Dakota Highway Patrol. Nelk’s car reportedly released off a driveway and rolled his truck two times before it stopped right side up.
Nelk was taken to a Fargo hospital with serious injuries. It was reported that Nelk was not wearing a seatbelt.
