We are learning more about the fatal shooting of a man by the Jamestown Police department early Tuesday morning.
The Jamestown Police Department says the incident began outside of Fred’s Den around 1:17 a.m. after the man had allegedly been kicked out of the bar after an altercation.
JPD was reportedly en-route to respond when another caller to dispatch reported shots fired at the bar. An investigation later found rounds that had allegedly went through the bar’s window. Other buildings were also reportedly hit with gunfire.
Jamestown Police Chief Scott Edinger is praising the sergeant who then first responded the scene alone. That sergeant allegedly confronted the shooter after arriving from a couple blocks away. The suspect allegedly had a rifle and a knife. Chief Edinger said the officer approached the man while he was still firing and tried to talk to him and get him to drop his weapons. When that failed, and Edinger says the officer felt their safety and the safety of others was at risk, he fatally shot the man. Chief Edinger says the sergeant’s actions on Tuesday “saved lives.”
The investigation is continuing with the assistance of the North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigation. The name of the suspect has not been released.
