Creighton University experts warn of potential disruptions to agricultural and manufacturing sectors if Atlantic and Gulf Coast port workers strike in mid-January, after the extension has expired.
The tentative agreement between the International Longshoremen’s Association and the United States Maritime Alliance, Ltd., will expire on January 15, and seeks substantial wage increases and reductions in automation.
The Experts highlighted the economic impact of weaker exports, which reduces U.S. competitiveness abroad, alongside stagnant productivity growth in agriculture and manufacturing. Adding to the uncertainty, challenges posed by the incoming Trump administration’s focus on tariffs and Automation’s role in increasing efficiency, add to these pressures.
These combinations of global economic weakness, labor disputes, and policy changes poses significant risks to the agricultural economy and related industries.
