A Hankinson church was severely damaged in a fire on Monday, December 12.
Smoke was reported billowing out of the St. Philip’s Catholic Church around 4:30 p.m. Multiple agencies responded to the blaze, including the Hankinson, Lidgerwood, and Wahpeton fire departments. The fire took multiple hours to extinguish, and by 9:00 p.m. the fire was reported to be out.
There is reportedly extensive damage to the church, including a ceiling that has collapsed. Investigators believe the fire started in the bell tower, but are unsure of the cause at this time.
Inspections of the damage will continue throughout Tuesday.
