PAYTON GALL, KSJB LOCAL NEWS-

Two Maryland men have been sentenced for targeting older North Dakota women in a romance fraud scheme.

Two men from Maryland were sentenced on Monday for a scheme where they posed as U.S. military members deployed in another country. These fake personas sought out and contacted elderly women on social media, leading the women to believe they had formed a romantic relationship.

After forming the relationships, the Maryland men, Chinedu Nwafor and Vitus Uzowuru, posing as “General Joseph Martins” or “Diplomat David Jones,” had the women send large cashier checks to them to aid them in their supposed sudden legal troubles overseas. A New Town resident sent a total of $200,000 to the two men.

Another case involves Juliet Monlenda, who scammed a total of$800,000 from a Tioga woman since 2022. He is set to go to trial in July.
