North Dakota’s blue laws were repealed in 2019, but a new bill going to the state’s House of Representatives considers bringing blue laws back.

Blue Laws prohibit certain businesses form being open from midnight until noon on Sundays, which is considered the sabbath in Christian religions. The law would mostly affect retail outlets selling items like jewelry, clothing, vehicles, and paint or lumber. Business owners who hold Sabbath on a different day would be closed on their respective days instead of Sundays. A lot of businesses would be exempt for the law, with most of those businesses the kind the state considers essential.

The repeal of North Dakota’s previous blue law was decided by only two votes.
