A new study has revealed that LGBTQ youths are at much higher risk of violence and alarmingly high rates of suicide in North Dakota.

The ‘State of the State’ report for LGBTQ youth from the Harbor Health Initiative found that 67% of gay children and 74% of those identifying as transgender ‘seriously’ considered self-harm or suicide in the past year in the state.   That compares to 20% of self-identifying straight students.  Lesbian and gay youths were also twice as likely to be the victim of sexual violence.

This was one of the first studies of it’s kind done in North Dakota.  The study  counted nearly 10,000 lesbian, gay, or bisexual children in middle school or high school, about 19%of the school-aged population.
