North Dakota lawmakers debated House Bill 1101 on Monday, a bill that if passed, would add mitragynine, derived from kratom, to a list of controlled substances.
The bill is supported by those like the North Dakota Board of Pharmacy. In conversation with KFGO, registered nurse McKenzie McCoy said kratom withdrawal is worse than just a fentanyl or heroin withdrawal. From Minot, official Olivia Martin backed the drug and was against the bill. Martin stated that she has seen her mother live with pain from lupus, but she has been able to manage the pain with kratom based medications compared to an alternative.
The FDA has warned that kratom might not be safe but the administration has not banned or approved kratom, either.
