The North Dakota Legislature is considering easing restrictions on having livestock near communities in the state.
A legislative task force was asked to look at ways to make the state more accommodating to livestock producers. One of their recommendations is to reduce the distance large livestock sites must be from residential or business areas. They also recommend allowing exemptions when communities approve. Supporters say less regulations will be a boon to small communities in North Dakota, and bringing jobs and tax revenue from elsewhere to the state.
The recommendations come at a time when large producers with large feedlots are under heightened scrutiny over the impact on water and air quality. North Dakota Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring attended the discussions, as did representatives for producers and environmental groups.
The legislature has yet to take a position on the recommendations.
