North Dakota Senator Kristin Roers is the main sponsor of a new bill introduced in North Dakota legislature that would have the state start making “blackout” license plates.

Senator Roers spoke with Valley News Live about the topic, and the plates would have a black background and white letters and numbers. The plates would mean having an annual payment of $25 dollars after an initial fee of $15. The blackout plate has already become an option in the nearby state of Minnesota. Minnesota reported that the blackout license plates exceeded 250,000 sales in the first year.

The fees that are collected from these plates in Minnesota are meant to fund transportation costs and the state’s vehicle services fund.
