The U.S. Supreme Court has rejected a bid by North Dakota Republicans challenging a state house district on tribal land.
The case involved legislative districts on the Fort Berthold and Turtle Mountain reservations that were drawn in 2021. Republicans in those districts filed a suit challenging the law, saying it was unconstitutional to consider race when drawing those districts. A three-judge District Court panel in North Dakota previously rejected those arguments, saying Native Americans are guaranteed electoral representation under the Federal Voting Rights Act.
The U.S. Supreme Court upheld that ruling on Monday, leaving those districts on tribal land in place and dismissing the case.
