Two bipartisan bills addressed Tuesday in North Dakota’s Legislature propose providing free school meals to all K-12 students, backed by 82% public support. Both bills would allocate $140 million per biennium, with HB 1475 using general funds and HB 1553 using Legacy Fund oil and gas earnings. The initiative, supported by over 60 organizations, would complement existing federal meal funding for low-income students and builds on more limited free meal legislation passed in 2023.
