Since Byron Buxton the Minnesota Twins have not had a prospect as highly ranked and highly touted than Walker Jenkins.
Jenkins was selected in the 2023 MLB draft at pick number 5 by the Minnesota Twins out of South Brunswick High School in Southport, North Carolina.
In his first year in the minor league system under the Twins organization, Jenkins was already called up to another Class (AA) at just 19 years old. An injury in the early part of the season held him back for a little bit, but then Jenkins produced the rest of the season, going .282/.394/.439 in the slash lines, while also stealing 17 bases in 20 attempts, adding 6 homeruns.
Despite the good start to his minor league career, at the recent Twinsfest events the team puts on every off season, Jenkins was asked about what he expects going into his next season, and if the bar and expectations are going to raise a little more for him. Jenkins said, “Being injured somewhat hindered the way I like to play, I had to be able to manage my body, and I wasn’t able to go what I felt like was full throttle all the time.”
And the expectations WILL be raised, “I have extremely high expectations for myself, I feel like last season, that was a below-average year for me. Like, I’m not happy with my performance last year. … I want to do better. I’m always going to set extremely high expectations that almost feel out of reach, because I think that’s the only way I can get to where I want to be.”
Twins fans may have to wait another year or two before Jenkins is ready to make his Major League Baseball debut, but according to what has happened and will happen, Twins fans might not need to wait long for another top prospect to join the lineup, and hopefully bring another World Series Championship home to Minnesota.
