Minnesota Stepping Up Its HPAI Tracking/Testing

By Ryan King Jan 31, 2025 | 7:22 AM

The University of Minnesota’s College of Veterinary Medicine has received $1.2 million in state funding to lead research on highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) and its growing impact in the state.

With concerns over its spread to cows and humans, researchers will establish a statewide surveillance program in collaboration with state biologists, wildlife centers, and zoos. The team will collect and test 9,000 samples from free-ranging birds and mammals, utilizing a new rapid detection system to provide real-time results.

This initiative aims to better understand how HPAI spreads beyond birds to wild and domestic mammals, ultimately informing strategies for public health and agriculture.
