According to North Dakota Game and Fish, 17 more deer have tested positive for Chronic Wasting Disease, also known as CWD. 15 of the new cases were taken by hunters and two were clinical deer confirmed positive through diagnostic examination.
In the 2024 sampling season, Game and Fish tested 1,456 animals for the disease. Sampling efforts fell short of the 10% goal in units where surveillance of CWD was concentrated. CWD is a disease that is caused by abnormal protein in the body of deer, elk and moose. CWD is fatal and can have long-term population impacts when infection rates climb.
