It was a night for the underdogs at the Jamestown Civic Center.
The Boys District 2B Basketball Tournament resumed with the evening semifinals featuring the top four seeds in the tournament. Top-seeded Edgeley/Kulm/Montpelier faced Medina-Pingree/Buchanan first, with the tournament-favorite Rebels attempting to advance to the tournament championship to defend last year’s title.
The Thunder had other ideas from the opening tip. M-P/B scored on their first possession, and would never relinquish the lead, which would balloon to as many as 15 points in the second quarter. E/K/M would mount a slow, methodical comeback in the second half and get within one score multiple times in the fourth quarter. The Thunder would hold on with clutch free throw shooting down the stretch, including two in the final seconds from Terek Kinzell to ice it. M-P/B would win by a final of 55-50 and advance to Tuesday night’s championship.
Chase Ova and Gage Hoffman led the Thunder with 13 points each, with Kinzell adding 11. Hoffman would also grab a game-high 9 rebounds.
They’ll face LaMoure-Litchville/Marion who used an impressive second half comeback to surprise #2 Linton/HMB in the nightcap in Jamestown. Linton/HMB would lead by 10 at halftime, but then would score only two third-quarter points, and 15 total second half points. L-L/M used a red-hot fourth quarter where they scored 21 points, with forward Brayon Kaarlgard scoring 14 of his 16 points in the second half, to propel past the Loboes by a final of 53-50.
The Thunder and Loboes will play tonight at 7:00 p.m. for the District Championship, and both teams will advance to the Regional Tournament that begins next Monday at the Civic Center.
