Medina-Pingree/Buchanan completed their underdog run to the District 2B Boys Basketball Tournament Championship with a 44-40 win over LaMoure-Litchville/Marion at the Jamestown Civic Center.
The Thunder employed a surprise 1-3-1 half court zone defense to start the game, befuddling the Loboes offense in the first few minutes. M-P/B’s lead grew to 14-6 before an offense adjustment forced the Thunder out of the that zone.
L-L/M would continue to claw their way back to within one score multiple times throughout the rest of the game, but the Thunder would never relinquish the lead. A steal by junior forward Gage Hoffman in the final seconds sealed their win and the program’s second district championship in the past three seasons.
Hoffman led the Thunder with 16 points and 15 rebounds. The Loboes were led by Mason Warcken’s 11 points.
Both teams will advance to the 1B Regional Tournament that will be held at the Civic Center next Monday, March 11.
