North Dakota voters may be asked to again decide on legislative term limits in the state.
A resolution narrowly passed by the senate would put a constitutional measure on the ballot that would allow legislators to serve up to 16 years. The current limit is eight, with the term limit becoming law after a citizen-initiated measure in 2022. The measure would be put on the ballot for voters to decide on the extension.
The Senate passed Concurrent Resolution 4008 by a 24-23 vote, with a fracture happening within the Republican caucus.
Two other term-limit-related items were voted down on Monday, both would have extended lawmakers’ power once again over term limit changes. One would have removed the voter-approved prohibition on lawmakers proposing term-limit changes. The other would have allowed the same, but provided for court challenges to strike down portions of proposed changes.
