USDA Extends Pork/Poultry Line Speeds

By Ryan King Mar 20, 2025 | 10:07 AM

The USDA has announced an extension of waivers allowing pork and poultry processing plants to operate at higher line speeds, aiming to reduce regulatory burdens and increase efficiency in the industry.

Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins emphasized that these changes will strengthen American agriculture while maintaining food safety standards.

Industry groups like the National Pork Producers Council and National Chicken Council have welcomed the decision, they argue that modernized processing methods will enhance competitiveness, reduce costs, and stabilize the supply chain.

Labor unions and worker advocates strongly opposed the move, warning of increased risks to worker safety. And the Retail, Wholesale, and Department Store Union (RWDSU) argued that faster production speeds could lead to more injuries and compromise food safety.
