As first reported by the Jamestown Sun, Applied Digital is expanding in Ellendale, North Dakota with a $5.3 billion investment in high-performance computing facilities, while its customers will invest an additional $15 billion. The company’s first 380,000-square-foot data center will begin operations this year, followed by two 900,000-square-foot expansions. To address housing needs, Applied Digital contributed $3.5 million to develop Ellendale Acres, featuring 20 homes and a 38-unit apartment complex. Governor Kelly Armstrong signed legislation on March 19 exempting large backup generators from state siting requirements. The company expects to employ 350 full-time workers and become a top-10 property taxpayer in North Dakota. Mayor Don Flaherty praised the project for revitalizing the community after decades of economic struggle.
