Wholesale egg prices in the U.S. have dropped to $3.45 per dozen, the lowest in nearly five months, following a period of extreme price fluctuations driven by supply chain issues, bird flu outbreaks, and shifting consumer demand.
Prices had peaked at $8.17 per dozen on March 3 due to tight supplies and seasonal demand but have since fallen by 57%. The USDA attributes this decline to increased egg inventories and a reduction in holiday-driven demand, along with a lack of significant bird flu outbreaks in March.
However, experts warn that retail prices may not immediately reflect wholesale drops, as there is typically a delay of two to three weeks, and retailers have discretion in pricing.
