Former state senator Ray Holmberg, an 81-year-old, pleaded guilty last year to travel with the intent to engage in illicit sexual activity. Holmberg is scheduled to be sentenced Wednesday.
Holmberg faces up to 30 years in prison and a $250,000 fine and lifetime supervised release. New court documents say Homberg used his positions as a high school guidance counselor and state official to exploit vulnerable youth and younger men. Holmberg has not been charged with any new crimes, and the case is mostly focused around him traveling to Prague at least 14 times from 2011 to 2021. While there, Holmberg allegedly visited brothels for commercial sex with adolescent boys.
Holmberg has been jailed in Minnesota since November.
