The Better Chicken Commitment (BCC) is a voluntary initiative urging poultry producers and food companies to adopt higher animal welfare standards.
Established in 2016 by animal welfare groups and scientists, the BCC sets specific requirements for stocking density, enrichment, humane slaughter practices, and third-party audits.
Over 200 companies, including major brands like Chipotle and Burger King, have pledged to meet these standards. The commitment also requires using approved chicken breeds to avoid health issues associated with fast-growing broilers, which often suffer from leg deformities, chronic pain, and cardiovascular diseases.
With concerns over avian influenza rising, experts stress that improved welfare practices can strengthen chickens’ immune systems and reduce disease transmission risks.
