The North Dakota House rejected proposed changes to the state’s term limit law.
The bill, Senate Resolution 4008, first passed in the state’s upper chamber before being debated in the House. The resolution would have allowed lawmakers to serve a total 16 years after being elected, overriding the citizen-passed initiative in 2022. That measure put eight year term limits for lawmakers into the state constitution. The bill received a majority of the votes in the House, 48-43, but failed to gain the required 48 votes for passage.
Lawmakers have indicated they will still try to revise the citizen-passed term limits in the future.
