A women’s correctional rehab center is scheduled to open in Mandan, North Dakota in 2027. The ground just broke on the construction of the Heart River Correctional Center.
The center is meant to house women an provides 304 beds. The center’s construction was funded by legislators who approved $131.2 million in funding in 2023. The total project budget climbed to $166.8 million after North Dakota Governor Kelly Armstrong’s budget recommendation. The facility is meant to focus on reinforcing family connections to improve outcomes for children of incarcerated parents.
Armstrong noted the project to be historic as it will be the first correctional center in North Dakota designed specifically for women.
