NDDOT offices report longer lines as residents seek REAL IDs before the May 7 air travel deadline. About 66% of North Dakotans already have the enhanced ID, exceeding the national average of 56%. Despite the TSA reporting 80% of Americans have compliant identification, NDDOT notes many people are still rushing to get theirs. Officials clarify the deadline only affects air travel and federal facility access, with opportunities still available after May 7. “About 70-80% of our current transactions are for REAL ID across the entire state,” said Schaffer. Some residents with valid REAL IDs are unnecessarily applying for new ones. Officials advise checking for a star in the upper right corner of current IDs to confirm compliance. Residents can reduce wait times by making appointments and completing pre-applications online.
