Homeland Security unexpectedly terminated a recent North Dakota State University graduate’s work status on April 4, according to a campus email from Provost David Bertolini. The student was participating in Optional Practical Training (OPT), which allows international students to work in fields related to their studies. The student’s SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System) status was terminated, potentially requiring immediate departure from the U.S. NDSU’s international student office responded within an hour to support the affected student. This appears part of a nationwide effort, with an immigration law firm reporting similar SEVIS terminations across the country targeting individuals based on “actual or perceived criminal histories.” NDSU has hosted support sessions for international students amid expectations that similar situations may arise again.
