The James Valley Library System Board unanimously approved updates to its materials challenge policy on Wednesday. Changes require complainants to experience the entire work and provide complete contact information. Appeals are now limited to three within three years (previously five in two years). Only cardholders or residents can challenge materials through a reconsideration process reviewed by Director Joe Rector, with a 10-day appeal window for declined requests. Valid appeals require public hearings and a supermajority vote to remove materials. Separately, board member Gail Martin questioned why Rector’s evaluation was conducted by newer members without full board input, as was previously practiced. Board member Jessica Alonge suggested amending the handbook for future evaluations.
