Farmers Converge in Kansas City for the NAFB

National Association of Farm Broadcaster’s convention in Kansas City opened Wednesday, featuring keynote speakers followed by Q&A sessions on pressing topics in the farm and agricultural industries.

First up was a panel on the Ag Labor Crisis, and how the incoming Trump Administration’s policies, including planned mass-deportation, will affect an already strained labor market.

Those conversations were followed by environmental topics including the long term impact of climate change on the industry, and how renewable fuels can be used in future to minimize costs for farmers across the country.

Livestock issues were also front-and-center, with discussions are the impacts of the viruses and health concerns in the market.

Two of the most discussed issues included tariffs and the status of the Farm Bill that is currently stalled in Congress. Most of those in attendance expressed some level of concern that tariffs promised by the Trump Administration could drive costs upwards on every level of the farm and ag industries.

The consensus was also that the Farm Bill is likely to be passed after the new Congress is seated in January, although some held out hope for a lame-duck passage in December.

Day two of the convention is tomorrow, and will feature the highly anticipated ‘Trade Talk’ sessions from industry leaders and experts.
