North Dakota officials approved part of an eight-billion-dollar carbon dioxide pipeline, helping Summit Carbon Solutions in its quest to build out the world’s largest CO2 storage and transportation network.
The decision comes after the same Public Service Commission rejected Summit Carbon’s initial application over a year ago. The plan is to put 333 miles of pipeline through North Dakota, part of a 2500-mile network of pipelines in five states. The pipelines would connect to 57 ethanol plants and back to an underground carbon storage site west of Bismarck.
Supporters view the project as vital to helping the ethanol industry. Opponents cite safety concerns, damage to farm and property values and rights violations as issues.
