The North Dakota Industrial Commission has approved permits related to the Summit Carbon pipeline.

The panel, led by Governor Doug Burgum, unanimously approved three proposed storage site projects in the Central part of the state.  The permits allow for underground storage of millions of metric tons of carbon dioxide that a proposed 2500 mile-long pipeline would carry from ethanol plants throughout the Midwest.

The project is facing staunch opposition from landowners, and it’s expected they will continue filing lawsuits to stop storage plans.

Summit Carbon Solutions Executive Vice President Wade Boeshans praised the approval, saying it will allow the company to expand what they describe as vital infrastructure in the state.

The $8 billion pipeline would transport CO2 emissions from 57 ethanol plants in the Midwest, with storage in North Dakota.
