Some North Dakota lawmakers have proposed during the 69th Legislative Session this week that a poster with the Ten Commandments be required to be posted on every public school and higher education classroom wall. A South Dakota lawmaker has suggested this in their state as well. This was suggested in North Dakota in 2021 but with no real enforcement to the rule. Cody Schuler of the American Civil Liberties Union states that “by the state putting into law mandating one particular version of a religious document, it is showing preference, and that would be a violation, in our opinion, of the separation of church and state.” Others believe that this rule would help instill good values in students, but a similar rule in Louisiana that passed was struck down by a federal judge last summer.
